comment Nice crisp popadoms, with a good selection of pickles in good quantities.

The Lamb Tikka Pathia was a good effort as were the Bhindi Bhaji and Aloo Mushroom.

The Nan breads were a little doughy but had a nice strong garlic taste.

Service was quick and pleasant even though the place was pretty busy.
All round a good competent solid effort

comment SLOW service, and blamed us for getting the order wrong.
Other places would have appologised rather than argued.

Tiny amounts of pickle with the popadoms.

Hara Bara Kebab starter was a nice change from the norm.

The Lamb Rogan Josh was watery and only really had Chili and oinion in its flavours. The heat was just right, but everything else was lacking.

The Nan breads were nice, but the other sides were poor. The Okra was tough byond a joke.

Just don't go here, there are so many nicer places you could go instead.

comment While away on a biking holiday in the north there is only so much of Scotland's wonderful sea food you can eat before you start thinking "This could do with a bit more spice". It was this thought that lead me to the Dil Se curry house in Kirkwall on Orkney.

The decor was pure curry house classic, but the music was thankfully not. Service was good if a little impersonal. This was made up for as they had Orkney Dark Island in bottles which goes surprisingly well with curry.

Things started well for me with a truly excellent mixed kebab starter. This place really has got the hang of marinading meat. For Tina, who is vegetarian, this was of little comfort. Her starter of Channa on Puri was a touch bland. The flavours were great, just nowhere near enough of them.

Main courses arrived and this theme continued. The lamb in my main dish was lovely, but a mouthful of the sauce that didn't have any lamb in it was a bit of a disappointment. The flavour was nice and well balanced, it just needed the volume turned up.The sides were good although the Mushroom Bajhee was without sauce, so was more like fried spicy mushrooms than what I expect from mushroom bajhee. I liked it, you could really taste the mushroom and spices. Tina was less impressed, again thinking that the flavour just needed to be beefed up a bit.

In a break with tradition, we finished the meal with a sweet. It was lovely, but not in any way Indian. Mmm, Belgian waffles.

In conclusion, Dil Se is probably worth a visit if you are in Kirkwall by virtue of being the only game in town, even though I did leave still thinking "That could have done with a bit more spice". It is probably worth ordering something one step more spicy than you would usually try and I think the Tandoori mixed grill would be an excellent choice for any carnivores out there.

comment Popadoms: slow to arrive, limited to mango chuckney and mildly spiced onions with them.

Chicken Liver Parfait: brussels pate, with a nice chuckney and curry sauce. nice enough, but expensive for what it was.

Lamb Kadhai: A bit mild, but nice enough. Barry had the same dish and had hardly any Lamb, My dish was okay. Barry's replacement dish had more lamb, and was a fair bit spicier. If my first dish had been like the replacement I'd have been happier. Seems like they have a repeatability problems with theier dishes.

Sides: Nans were nice enough. Rice portions were small and arrived late after other things had cooled. Other side dishes were small in size considering they were supposed to be main dish sized.

Service: Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Price of £20 was after all main dishes had been removed from the bill. This place was expensive and had pretentions that it could not live up to.

comment Mushroom Pakora were good, but could have been crispieer on the batter.

Kathmandu Lamb was full of flavour and cooked well, but I think I will avoid chickpeas in future. Not the restaurants fault.

Sides were good but no bhindi bajhi!

Service was great considering we were unexpected and only one person was working front of house.

comment Popadoms were a little lacking in a veriety of pickles.

Mushroom pakora were well cooked and had a nice spicy batter. The sauces to go with it were a bit bland, but it didn't need them.

The mixed Tandoori grill was a good size, but was too dry.

The mushroom side was OK, but not great.
The Tarka Dhall had an odd texture and not much flavour.

The nan breads were huge, but also dry and lacking in flavour because of that.

comment Popadoms were a little stale and the quantity of things to go on them was fine. However 2 types of Onion (mint and Chilli) and a thin mango chuckny is not a great pickle tray.

I skipped starter as I knew of this places portion sizes.

My main was a Lamb Dansak and was good, not outstanding, but good. Others felt there was a lack of spice in some dishes, but I didn;t find that.

The Nan breads are enormous and good. Not outstanding (apart from their size), but good.

The Mushroom Bahji and Bhindi Bhaji were both good, actually the Mushroom Bhaji was better than good.
The Tarka Dhall was kind dull. Needed WAY more garlic.

Service was fast, friendly and lead to a good atmosphere. The price was bumped up as I think more beer than usual was consumed. Or perhaps that was just me.

Portion size is large. Especially some starters that would have beaten the size of Main dishes in some other places. This can mean less choice as you get less dishes, or you end up with too much food. Not a problem as long as you are aware of it.

comment Popadoms arrived with a good amount of pickle and a second round just appeared as we got through the first lot. This suited me, but may have been too much for some light weights.

My Chicken kebab starter was really nice with a nice amount of spiced onion and peppers to go with the chicken.

The Lamb Pathia I had for main was tasted good and had plenty of well cooked tender lamb. it suffered a little from just being meat-in-a-sauce with little in the way of veg mixed in.

The sides were good, but the mushroom bhajee was a bit oily. Naan breads were nicely garlic and only a too little crisped in some places.

Service was accurate, friendly and fairly swift.
And as a nice surprise the bill at the end was astoundingly low.

comment Popadoms were good, but let down by an incredibly salty lime pickle.

Starter of Veg Pakora was nice and crisp with a reasonable sauce. Good but not outstanding.

Main of Special Tandoori Balti was a mix of all the different meats in a medium hot and rich sauce.

The Nan breads were good and the Tarka Dahl was too, Although it was unusually hot and thick. I liked it.

The Bhindi Bhaji was a little tough, but not enough to spoil it.

Atmosphere and service was good but really let down by long wait between ordering and the arrival of the food.

comment Popadoms
A little stale with an uninspiring selection of pickles. A good quantity of onion mix helped. NO LIME PICKLE!

Mixed Kebab Starter
Nice well flavoured and a good size for a starter. It was missing the lamb kebab, which was remidied later, but was nice despite that.

Green Herb Lamb
Medium to mild heat, but nicely flavoured with loads of spring onion and a rich sauce.

Sides
richly flavoured and well cooked.

Service was a little haphazard at order taking and they were pushing the expensive bottled beer too strongly for my liking. However food and bill delivery were prompt and acurate.

comment My popadom was a little overdone but others looked fine. The pickles were good and of a reasonable size too.

Starter: Veg Pakora
nice and light and crispy.

Main : Mixed Grill
Oh My God, so much meat!
This place definately specialises in grilled meats.
The other stuff was good, but the mixed grill was astonishing. Well flavoured and huge portion.

Sides: portions a little small perhaps.
Mushroom Bhaji. Real well spiced and nice
Bhindhee Bhaji. nice, but not special
Tarka Dhall. really good, rich and not watery

Service was good but a little on the slow side, especially bringing out the bill.

Atmosphere was modern and open without feeling like a fast food joint.

Value for money, astonishing given the quality of the food.

comment Poppadums came with plenty of good quality pickle.
2 lime pickles, Mango and Onions. Could have done with a riata type dip too.

Sheek kebab starter was well spiced and had a good lamb flavour.

Side dishes were good as was the haggis Nan, but the main dish was a bit of a let down.
I had Lamb Ada, which is labelled as a medium.
It had a nice flavour, but wasn't even in the top end of mild for spicyness. A few other folk who had mediums noted the same. The hots do seem to really be hot though.

The service in this place was slow.
No, Slower than that.

Atmosphere was spoiled by the wait and by other customers obviously also being unhappy.
The staff didn;t seem to be in a great mood either.

The food was nice enough when it finally arrived.
Although the some dishes were cooling by the time everything had arrived.

The price for all this entertainment was a good deal over the average.

In short, don't go to this restaurant.

comment Popadoms: Very good popadoms, with unusual pickles, could have used slightly more pickles.

Starter: Mixed Pakora and Bonda.

Main: Lamb Achari. Very rich and tasty, not too hot.

Sides: Bombay Aloo Nice and spicy.
Bhindi Baji well cooked, but a little bland.
Beetroot Pachdi, comical colour, not much flavour.

comment Popadoms were good, but pickle selection was odd.
Chilli Onions had a hint of HP sauce to them, no lime pickle.

Tod Mun - Thai Fishcake starter
Were crisp, tasty and not oily.

Shat Kora Gust - Lamb in Calamansi juice, Lemon leaves & Rind with Chilli.
Unusual, but nice. Quite light and hot end of medium. Lemon flavour was a key note with good spicing for other flavours. I liked it but you'd have to like citrus.

Mushroom Bhajee side
Rich and packed with mushrooms. very good.

Bhindee Bhajee side
Well cooked, but a little light on sauce. which is a shame as the sauce was nice.

Garlic Nan
Well cooked, good size, not strongly garlic, but it was there.

Service was accurate, and not pushy. They dealt very well with a confusion in the order ending up with a spare starter. The letdown in service was how slow things were in arriving. Also mains arrived a bit ahead of the rice and sundries.

Beers were restricted to small bottled beers, having something suitable on tap in pints would be a big improvement here.

Hot soup thing as pre starter was nice for a change.

Tandoori Stuffed Mushrooms were pretty plain and relied on the supplied sauces for much flavour

Lahoori Chicken Karahi was a bit mild for my tastes but had a nice mix of flavours.

Garlic Naan was very nice and garlicy, but small.
Side dishes were very good, but could have done with more of them.

Portion size of all dishes was on the small side and prices were on the high side. This would have been okay if the food was exceptional, but it wasn't. It was nice, but nothing really special.

comment This place is Tapas style which put me off a bit, but the food turned round my initial feelings.
Each dish was about starter or small main dish in size.
3 each turned out to be about the right level.
I still prefer the normal popadoms->starter->main meal plan.

Popadoms were nice and crisp with good chilli-onion and Mango dips. However there were the only dips.

For main course I had Chilli Garlic Chicken, Patina Lamb & Okra Aloo Bhaji.

The Chilli Garlic chicken was lovely, but possibly not as hot as some would like it. It was plenty hot enough for me.

The Patina Lamb was rich and almost BBQ with mint. Unusual and nice.

The Okra Aloo Bhaji was a nice blend of flavours with a slightly hot'n'sour sauce.

The Garlic Nans were a little underdone, but nice and Garlic.

Also good to see Kingfisher on draught at a resonable price per pint.

Popadoms, Crispy, Plentiful and with a good array of pickles.

Shish Kebab:
Tasty, but a bit dry.

Lamb Karahi:
Very good with a rich sauce. possibly lacking a bit in spicyness.

Okra and Potato Bhaji:
Well cooked and good chunky cut Okra.
Sauce was a bit bland for my taste.

Service was good considering the chaotic nature of a group of 13 in a tapas style venue. Not perfect, but good enough. Value was good considering that most folk had a couple of beers on the side.

comment Popadoms and pickles were plentiful and nice, although the lime pickle was a little lacking in kick.

My starter of Chana Bhuna with Puri was lovely, but perhaps a bit big for a starter.

Main of Murghi Kemma Massalam (madras heat) was lovely, rich and with a good heat

The sides I had were good, rich but not outstanding.

Service was friendly competent and attentive, unfortunately let down by the kitchen being slow.

Atmosphere was good, possibly helped by the larger than average beer bill.

Value wasn't too bad considering a bit more drink was consumed than on some other nights.

comment Pre-Starters: We were quickly offered poppadoms, as we were seated, before we even got the menus. They arrived swiftly and had a 6 dip selection big enough for up to 6 folk. Mango Chuckney, Spicy Onions, Lime Pickle, Green Chili Pickle, BBQ Chili Sauce and a lightly spiced yogurt sauce. They worked really well when mixed up in combinations.

Starter: Crab Malaba.
Lightly spiced crab served with onion and cheese melted over the top. Really nice and unusual. Not very Indian feeling, more Mediterranean, but still nice.

Main: Lamb Tikka Garlic Delight.
Supposedly a medium, but actually a mild curry. It did pay out on the garlic though with probably a few cloves in slices through the dish. The meat was well cooked and spiced. Overall a good dish that would have been a little better if it had been a medium rather than a mild.

Sides: The garlic nan was a bit undercooked, but had plenty of garlic. The mushroom rice was full of mushrooms but possibly a little heavy on the Cardamom.

If I was going here again I would buy something one notch higher up the spiciness scale than usual for me as they are a bit timid on the chili. Apart from that this place is excellent

Overall atmosphere was good but Service was SLOW. Otherwise not too bad. BYOB without corckage was nice.

Popadoms could have used more pickle and some plates to eat them from.

Fried Chilli Idli starter:
Nice, Hot. A sort of rice/chickpea/chilli fritter

Lamb Karaikudi:
A good rich medium hot sauce that was not quite as hot as menu suggested. Plenty of flavour especially cardumom. Portion size was perhaps a little small, but not miniscule.

Sides:
Potato side was basically a slightly spiced mash. not very inspiring. Portion size on sides was a bit small too.

comment The food was nice and rich, the lime pickle was excellent, they brought us filler dishes due to taking a while to get starters ready, without us complaining.

My starter could have done with a dipping sauce, but I think others who had the same starter got some. Still nice though.

comment The Trisuli Polcko Machha is a lightly spices BBQ'd whole fish. Too lightly spiced in my opinion.

The Ruckmane Lamb was great,
The Nans were good,
Most of the sides were nice, but the Okra was overdone.

DO NOT come in a big group.
They just cannot seem to cope.

Oh, and the beer is expensive.

comment Popadoms crispy, Good Quality and quantity of dip. Nothing extra special, just good at what it is.

Chicken Tikka, succulent and well spiced. Good portion size for a started, not too big. nice sauces, especially the tamarind.

Murgh Pudina Wala- Lamb with Poppy seed, Mint, Spices. Medium/Mild.
Really rich and well rounded taste. Milder than suggested on the Menu, but still with a enough bite.

Sides.
Chili & corriander Nan added the needed heat to my Milder than expected Main.
The Mushroom Bahji was not very spiced, but Very Garlicy and increadibly nice.

Atmosphere, service and price would be unrealistic to expect more from anywhere.

comment Starter: Spicy Duck
Main: Nizami Gosht
Sides: Zeera Aloo, Mushroom Bhaji

As always a service was swift and a pleasure.
The food was all great, just that bit better than other restaurants. Care has been taken to balance the flavours in the sides as much as with the main dishes.

The spicy duck was slightly let down by being spicy enough that it drowned out the flavour of the duck.
Still nice.

comment Popadoms: Crispy and served with plenty of pickles.

Starter: Haggis Samosa. Interesting and nice, but not outstanding.

Main: Lamb Kali Mirch Bhona. Spicy, with lots of black pepper. Nice balanced mix of sauce, meat and veg.
Sides: Cumin potatoes. Realy good.
Mushroom Bhaji. Some of the best I've had.
Garlic Nan. Nicly garlicy and not dry. Pre-cut to a good size.
Service: Faultless and fast without feeling pushy.
Atmosphere: Friendly with a good layout and uncramped feeling.

Value for Money: Great food at less than average prices.

comment Garlic mushroom Pakura -Batter a touch sweet.
Lamb Jaipur - Nice, perhaps lacking a little kick.
Bhindi Bhajee - well done.
Garlic Nans - well done.

Delivery order of all Starters then Sauce and all Mains then rice then nans was wrong.

Otherwise service was pretty good.
General feeling was dishes lacked a little in spice.

comment Popadoms: nice pickles, but only just enough of them.

Starter: Bengali Fish Cakes. Really nice. WEll spiced but not so much as to kill the fish flavours.

Mains:
Patina Lamb Karahi. Good strong flavor but a bit over salted.
Hakka Chilli Paneer. Spicy noodles with no real flavour other than the chilli. also a bit greesy.
Chicken Achari: Big nicly flavoured roast chicken drumsticks. Unfortunately the large drumsticks hadn't cooked all the way through and were still raw in the middle!
Tandoori Roti: Brea that never arrived. (wasn't on bill)

Service was SLOW. Atmosphere was good and would have been better had the wait for food been less.

comment
After a poor start of not seeming to expect us, the service was fairly prompt and mostly accurate.
Not to pushy but there with beers when needed.

My Sheesh kebab starter and Lam Pathia main were both well made and above average.

The sides and bread were fairly average, but came in good portions.

overall, not at all bad. Just not outstanding.
